1. The learner will be able to:
Discuss different nursing theories and identify an approach model for psychiatric nursing
Critically discuss current practices and therapeutic approaches in psychiatric nursing
Discuss ethical and legal concerns relating to psychiatric nursing

2. The learner will be able to:
Do a complete nursing audit
Use the results of nursing audits as a basis for staff education and training
Establish and maintain ongoing supervision of staff on an individual and group basis to ensure high standards of nursing practice
Institute a relevant in-service training programme to address quality, legality and professionalism

3. The learner will be able to:
Design a daily activity programme to meet the treatment needs of various age groups
Evaluate effectiveness of the treatment by doing outcomes based research
Make recommendations to institute policy changes in order to establish therapeutic programmes
Act as a leader of a multidisciplinary team in the rendering of appropriate and relevant treatment
Critically evaluate the functioning of established therapeutic milieu and give relevant feedback to designated leaders

1. The learner will be able to:
Collect and interpret relevant local statistics and compare this to regional and national statistics
Present scientifically based situational analyses relating to mental health services and mental health service needs for all age groups
Collaborate with relevant role players in the establishment of services based on community needs assessments and mental health service needs for all age groups

2. The learner will be able to:
Discuss the factors, which influence policy and the development of psychiatric services
Appropriately refer clients to relevant public, private or non-governmental services depending on the clients` needs
Identify and evaluate factors influencing mental health treatment and rehabilitation

3. The learner will be able to:
Take a full psychiatric history of a client
Evaluate the influence of any relevant factors in the predisposition, precipitation or perpetuation of a psychiatric disorder
Use a conceptual model to describe the patients` situation with insightful use of psychiatric theories in order to develop a psychodynamic formulation
Discuss differential diagnosis based on the clinical picture
Use the DSM IV multi-axial diagnosis and the ICD 10 coding of the diagnosis made

4. The learner will be able to:
Do individual, group and family therapy using different therapeutic models
Evaluate the effectiveness of medication as an adjunct to other treatments
Do psycho-education depending on the clients` or community`s needs
Institute tertiary prevention programmes including relapse prevention, discharge planning, referral and rehabilitation.

Elective – Psychiatric Nursing Science – Adult Elective:

1. The learner will present at least 5 case studies which will incorporate:-
A complete psychiatric history
A psychodynamic formulation using developmental theories
A multi-axial diagnosis
A nursing management plan to address identified problems
Relevant referral or involvement of community resources
Appropriate discharge planning and follow-up

2. The learner will act as group facilitator for a minimum of 6 group sessions with a group of clients, which she shall be supervised.

The learner will be able to:-
Critically compare individual and group therapy
Compare verbal and non-verbal approaches to group therapy
Discuss group process and the phases of group development
Critically evaluate the benefits of group psychotherapy

3. The learner will:-
Determine the level of stress experienced by nurses through use of scientific data collection and analysis
Design, implement and support educational programmes to meet the needs established
Advise nursing management and staff acuity and attrition as well as ways of recruiting and retaining staff

4. The learner will:-
Differentiate between physical, emotional and cultural causes for behaviour
Act as patient advocate within the multidisciplinary team
Educate members of the multidisciplinary team on reasons for the patient`s distress and teach appropriate psychiatric interventions
Establish patient support services in general wards
Involve general ward staff in supporting the distressed patient through in-service education or case discussions

5. The learner will:-
Develop a mental health education programme for adults in order for them to identify stresses and early signs of psychiatric illness.
Institute a programme for the teaching of relevant and appropriate coping skills, stress management and lifestyle change

Elective – Psychiatric Nursing Science – Child and Adolescent Elective:

1. The learner will do at least 10 clinical assessments of children and adolescents, which will incorporate
Play therapy. (The learner will demonstrate insight into the development of play).
Verbal and non-verbal therapies. (The learner will demonstrate insight into language development and usage).
A developmental assessment. (The learner will demonstrate insight into the significance of developmental milestones).
Feedback from significant adults, e.g. parents, caregivers, teachers and other health professionals

2. The learner will present at least 10 case studies which will incorporate:-
A comprehensive psychiatric and physical history
A psychodynamic formulation using developmental theories and other influences on development
A multi-axial diagnosis
A nursing management plan to address identified problems
Relevant referral or involvement of community resources
Appropriate discharge planning and follow-up
Discuss group process and the phases of group development
Critically evaluate the benefits of group psychotherapy

3. The learner will act as group facilitator for a minimum of 6 group sessions with a group of clients, which shall be supervised.
The learner will be able to:-

Involvement of the multidisciplinary team in the treatment process

5. The learner will demonstrate insight into early intervention to prevent the development of psychiatric illnesses by presenting at least 5 health education talks to:-
Parents
Health professionals
Teachers
Children`s homes
Community workers

Continuous assessment:
