The following will indicate the achievement of the learning outcome; the learner should be able to:

First Year:

1.
Collect and interpret data in a basic way against a body of basic scientific knowledge.
Formulate a symptomatic nursing diagnosis.
Create a basic care plan addressing the symptomatic health needs.
Identify individual risk factors and address appropriately and reporting it to the delegating authority.
Create a therapeutic environment to meet the needs of the individual, the group, and the community.
Provide an appropriate health maintenance plan after initial intervention.
Accurately monitor, record and report progress/lack of progress to the delegating authority.

2.
Demonstrate basic knowledge, skill and understanding of the physical, psychological and sociological responses and needs of individuals, groups and communities facing disasters and emergencies.
Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the execution of lifesaving practises in emergencies/disasters.

3.
Identify and promote creative cost-containing measures without compromising on the quality of nursing care.

4.
Demonstrate the ability to work well with other health team members.
Recognise the members of the multidisciplinary team.

5.
Apply the scientific process of nursing and primary health care principles to the nursing care of individuals, families and communities.
Demonstrate ethical behaviour in own practice.
Respond creatively to the health care needs of society.
Demonstrate commitment to promote excellence in nursing care.
Respond with sensitivity to cultural needs, values and beliefs of clients.
Render nursing and health care within the relevant legal parameters, including the South African Nursing Council regulations and the Nursing Act.

6.
Take self-responsibility to ensure continuous professional development.
Identify own learning needs for enhancing knowledge and skills and improving practice.
Explore and use opportunities for professional development.
Participate in self-directed learning activities aimed at improving knowledge and skills.
Assume responsibility for life-long learning.

7.
Apply the principles enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa and the Patient’s Charter to advocate for improvement of health care.
Demonstrate diplomacy in the application of the advocacy process in dealing with individuals and families.
Identify and utilise relevant social networks and resources.
Educate individuals, families and communities on their responsibility for their own health according to the patient’s rights charter.

8.
Discuss issues in relation to safety and human rights in the workplace.
Participate in promotion and protection of human rights of health workers.
Demonstrates loyalty towards the employer who enhances occupational safety and sound practices.
Demonstrate sound knowledge of disciplinary procedures, grievance handling procedure and codes of conduct relevant to the maintenance of good labour relations and professional standards.

9.
Demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour as summarised in the ethical codes of the nursing profession.
Be accountable and responsible for own behaviour.
Utilise structures in place to address unacceptable professional conduct.
Demonstrate respect to all clients’ spiritual and religious needs.

Second Year:

1.
Collect, analyse and interpret data against a body of scientific knowledge.
Formulate a basic nursing diagnosis.
Identify risk factors and areas for improvement of health care.
Identify health needs, priorities and set objectives for a basic plan of care.
Create a basic symptomatic nursing care plan to address health needs.
Create a therapeutic environment to meet the needs of the individual, family, group and community.
Implement planned interventions with active involvement of individuals and families with members of the health team.
Develop a maintenance health plan in collaboration with individuals/families and members of the health care team after the acture intervention.
Accurately monitor, record and report progress/lack of progress of clients and the outcome of interventions and adapt the plan of nursing care as necessary.
Report deviations/abnormalities in the expected progress of the client to the appropriate authority.

2.

Continuous assessment e.g. monthly ward reports of mentors, practical guidance and unstructured assessment.
