a). Critical cross-field assessment:
1. Identify and solve problems relevant to his/her level of training

b). Specific assessment:
1. Provide and facilitate basic nursing care in the community to individuals through all developmental stages, families and groups in the context of primary, secondary and tertiary levels of care
Collect, analyse, interpret data following the scientific approach to nursing care in the community
Plan, present and evaluate health education relevant to identified health needs of clients
Implement specific basic nursing skills to solve identified clients’ problems following the scientific process
Participate actively in community development projects as assigned by the registered person
2. Accept responsibility in the promotion and maintenance of a safe environment in community institutions and the health care facilities
Educate individuals, families and communities about personal and environmental hygiene at e.g. schools, home, workplace, etc
Motivate clients to develop self-care strategies within their capabilities
Address environmental issues that pose a threat to the health of the community using available resources with involvement of a health team
3. Perform tasks related to clinic organisation efficiently and effectively clinic organisation efficiently and effectively to ensure quality patient care
Observe economy in utilisation of clinic supplies, equipment and time
Demonstrate knowledge of medico legal and security risks possible at the clinic including side effects of medication and take appropriate measures to prevent them

4. Advocate for the rights of individuals, families and communities and for continued provision and development of quality health care

Participate in projects aimed at prevention and controlling communicable diseases, STD’s and HIV/AIDS and non-communicable conditions
Relate the cultural practices of the community to prevailing non-communicable diseases and facilitate preventive measures with involvement of the health team
6. Maintain ethical and moral codes of the nursing profession and practice within the prescription of relevant acts that affect nursing
Demonstrate insight into safe practice and take ethical decisions in accordance with his/her scope of practice
Abides by the principles of Batho Pele when executing delegated duties
Demonstrate understanding of relevant acts that influence nursing and apply them throughout his/her nursing practices

Clinical assessment done formally and informally:
Formal – OSCE
– practical proficiency tests conducted on students’ bookings
Summative assessment:
Internal examination on theory
Practical examination on clinical training 3 months prior to the national examination by the SANC
Formative and summative assessment:
Learners’ performance during formative and summative assessment by the local staff is considered in determining the final mark for entry into the national examination by the South African Nursing Council
