Assessment Criteria associated with Exit Level Outcome 1:1.1 High ethical standards and sensitivity are displayed in all dealings with the affected family and significant others.1.2 Interactions during counselling include acting as patient and/or family advocate, advisor and guide in terms of medical legislation, the Bill of Rights and the Patient Charter.1.3 Communication with patient and/or family is made effective by conveying complex genetic information in an understandable manner.Assessment Criteria associated with Exit Level Outcome 2:2.1 A genetic assessment of the individual and family is carried out and includes a detailed and directed family history and the construction of a family pedigree 2.2 The information on the family pedigree is interpreted and a genetic risk assessment is performed.2.3 Knowledge in selection and/or coordination of special investigations is judiciously applied, including the distinguishing between genetic screening and genetic diagnostic testing.2.4 The information obtained is critically analysed and the appropriate genetic counselling is provided to the patient and significant others.2.5 Relevant information is shared with other relevant members of the multi-disciplinary health care team within the boundaries of patient confidentiality.2.6 The concerns of the patient and significant others are identified and decision-making is facilitated.Assessment Criteria associated with Exit Level Outcome 3:3.1 The research inquiry is planned and conducted on the basis of a range of appropriate research designs, methods, techniques and technologies for the specific research problem.3.2 Research themes are appropriately identified and demarcated.3.3 Analyses of the research theme include a comprehensive and critical review of current literature and investigations.3.4 Selected research methods, techniques and technologies show evidence of a clear understanding of relevant research theory and practice.3.5 Research reports critically and coherently describe theoretical arguments, the research process, methodology, results, conclusions and recommendations.3.6 Research reports display skill in extrapolating key findings, justifiable conclusions and making feasible recommendations.Integrated Assessment:The assessment will be integrated in terms of the type of questions asked and be clinically orientated. The critical exit question is “will the candidate be able to function as a Genetic Counsellor within the medical community and society at large?”
