Assessment methods used for the Master’s programme in Nutrition ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.

A range of assessment methods are used to assess whether the specified outcomes have been achieved, such as a thesis, oral and electronic presentations, implementations of the research protocol under supervision of the study leader(s), 3 written examinations (in the case of the direct Master’s programme ) and one oral examination

Assessment is carried out by means of structured evaluation forms as far as possible to ensure reliability and validity.

The assessment used meets the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 8.

The criteria used to assess outcomes include the following:

o Students must perform duties within the research team in a mature and accountable way (outcome a, b)

o Students must submit a valid protocol (outcome a)

o Students must be able to lead team discussions with confidence (outcome b)

o Students must demonstrate acceptable standards in managerial procedures as it relates to the research (outcome c)

o Students must be able to give the correct interpretation of research findings, to give a critical evaluation of information, and to integrate and synthesise this information into a thesis (outcome a, d)

o Students must follow the correct statistical procedures (outcome d)

o Students must demonstrate high standards in terms of oral and written communication with individuals and groups (outcome e)

o Students must follow the correct measurement procedures (outcome f)

o Students must be objective in their assessment of international and national tendencies, in order to place it in the correct perspective according to South African requirements. They must apply knowledge and implement programmes relating to own research or literature findings (outcome g)

The criterion used to assess knowledge outcomes is whether the information and conceptual content of the work the student submits for marking is correct

The criterion used to assess skills outcomes (a, b, c, g, and j) is whether there is evidence of the student’s ability to use higher order cognitive functions

The criteria used to assess skills outcomes d, e and f) are whether the student can function independently, effectively and appropriately at level 8a.

The criterion used to assess skills outcome (h) is the ability of the student to extrapolate research findings appropriately

The criteria used to assess skills outcome (i) include the ability to debate effectively and with confidence as it related to the field of study.

The criteria used to assess skills (j) include the ability of the student to write coherent and concise research reports.

The criterion used to assess attitude outcomes (a and b0 include the ability of the students to show respect for people

The criterion used to assess attitude outcome ? is the openness to, and the effective handling of critique

The criterion used to assess attitude outcome (d and e) include the student’s professional approach to his/her work and own development, academic integrity and the adherence to regulations on ethics

The criterion used to assess attitude outcome (f) includes the student’s attitude to research

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Integrated assessment takes place in terms of the following procedures:

Research Thesis

Student’s submit a thesis containing a literature study, the conceptualisation, identification and definition of the problem, the methodology followed, results and discussion of the research findings, and a critique on the methodology or shortcomings of the study. They are evaluated in terms of standard criteria, and on the ability to successfully integrate all the elements required to substantiate the central thesis and contribution(s) of the study.

Assessment of implementation of protocol

Students are evaluated on their ability to work in a responsible and independent way in planning and implementing a project, and in analysing and interpreting the findings, as well as implementing the findings as appropriate. They also present their protocols to and academic audience, aiming at a critical discussion of the methodology.

Three written examinations (in the case of the direct Master’s programme)

The written examinations are planned to assess the student’s ability to integrate knowledge and skills acquired in the programme.

Oral examination

The oral examination at the end of the term/programme is planned to assess the student’s ability t integrate knowledge and skills required in the programme
