1.1. Utilise the knowledge of health needs to render basic nursing care
1.2. Study the nursing care plan developed by the registered nurse
1.3. Identify and accurately implement nursing interventions within her/his scope of practice and in consultation with the registered nurse and other members of the health team
1.4. Accurately record all interventions and report identified abnormalities
1.5. Demonstrate competency in executing nursing interventions within her scope of practice
1.6. Aware of cultural diversity in the nursing of individuals and groups
1.7. Demonstrate basic competencies in communication and interpersonal skills
1.8. Communicate in an acceptable and effective way across the cultural spectrum
2.1. Respect the dignity and worth of man in his/her interaction with the patient, his family and members of the health team
2.2. Abide by the principles of ethical codes
2.3. Take responsibility and accountability within the limits of her own competence and relevant legislation
3.1. Give appropriate and relevant health education to individuals and groups with specific reference to family planning, sexually transmitted and communicable diseases
3.2. Abide by the principles of asepsis
3.3. Prevent cross and nosocomal infections
4.1. Identify potential medico-legal and safety aspects in the environment that can influence the health of the individual and group
5.1. Give immediate appropriate and adequate first aid treatment.
Critical cross-field outcomes and associated assessment criteria:
1.1. Use knowledge and experience to decide on appropriate behaviour during nursing practice
1.2. Co-operate with other members of the health team
1.2.1. Recognise the place of the enrolled nursing auxiliary in the health team providing comprehensive health care
1.2.2. Use interpersonal and communication skills effectively in group situations
1.3. Utilise appropriate knowledge and skills in managing basic nursing care
1.3.1. Demonstrate discipline in personal and professional development
1.4. Critically analyse, collected data and decide on appropriate action with relation to basic nursing care
1.5. Use effective language skills during interaction with members of the health team, patient and his family
1.5.1. Use appropriate professional language in written and verbal communications
1.5.2. Interpret and report observations in a meaningful way
1.5.3. Express herself clearly in written and verbal communication
1.5.4. Keep clear, accurate and complete records
1.6. Use prescribed technology applicable to her level of competence safely and appropriately
1.7. Understand the position of the nursing profession within the greater health and intersectoral systems as well as interrelationships with community structures
1.8.1. Adapt personal learning style effectively to different presentations and settings
1.8.2. Participate in community activities related to health issues
1.8.3. Respect patients and members of the health team, without prejudice with regard to background, race, culture, gender and way of life
1.8.4 Investigate opportunities for further studies in the health delivery system
1.8.4.1 A positive approach to self directed lifelong learning
1.8.5. Contribute in a meaningful manner towards the quality of health in the community
INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT
While assessment will include the assessment of discrete skills and knowledge within units of learning, ultimately the assessment:
1. Must be applied to the specific role that the practitioner will play
2. Must be demonstrated in a integrative manner
3. Include the learner’s ability to carry out the practitioner’s role in an authentic context
4. Include a demonstration of the learner’s ability to adapt practice to meet changing circumstances
5. Is based on the principle of continuous assessment provided through:
Portfolios
Simulations
Workplace assessments and practical workbooks
Written assignments
Written tests
Case studies and case presentations
Peer-group evaluation
Competency evaluations of clinical skills
Face to face contact with learners
Include Summative assessment- the examination consists of the following two portions:
A written portion conducted by the South African Nursing Council and consisting of one paper of three hour’s duration on the subject, and
A practical portion conducted by Empilweni Education Nurse Educators on behalf of the South African Nursing Council.
