Nursing history and ethics:

5. Be up-to date with current issues influencing the nursing profession

Elementary nutrition:

1. Prepares a well balanced diet
2. Serves meals according to age requirements
3. Respects cultural beliefs on certain diets
4. Disinfects equipment and environment
5. Be considerate on poor appetite during illness

First aid:
1. Demonstrates safe CPR technique
2. Demonstrates environmental hazards for children and the aged
3. Demonstrates safe emergency delivery of a baby
4. Demonstrates efficient application of the general principles of first aid

Elementary anatomy and physiology:
1. Integrates structural knowledge with disease and basic nursing skills
2. Integrates knowledge of body functioning with disease and basic nursing care

Elementary social sciences:
1. Assists man in emotional adjustments
2. Assists man to cope in his critical developing mental stages
3. Assists man to cope with his illness

Basic nursing care:
1. Applies the scientific approach to nursing care effectively
2. Identifies deficits in the essentials for daily living
3. Maintains safe practices at all times
4. Practises efficient basic nursing care relevant to the individual in need
5. Makes relevant observations and acts accordingly

Micro organisms and parasites:
1. Outlines the classification of micro organisms
2. Implements sterilisation methods effectively
3. Washes hands in between and disposes waste matter appropriately

Medicines and medication:
1. Outlines the classification of medicines efficiently
2. Outlines the schedule of medicines according to legislation
3. Takes precautions in the administration of medicines
4. Identifies side-effects and quick to respond
5. Teaches patients on the frequency of dosages on discharge

Introduction to comprehensive health care:
1. Implements hygiene practices personally and in the environment
2. Practices the aseptic methods effectively

Diet therapy:

1). Continuous assessment:

Theory:

Year one:
Eight evaluations will be conducted
Four evaluations will be quantitative
Two evaluations will be written projects
Two evaluations will be on group work

Year two:
8 evaluations will be conducted
4 evaluations will be quantitative on sopecific outcomes
2 evaluations will be on group projects assessing critical cross-field outcomes

The average mark will give a year mark

Practical:

Common basic course: (Year one)

15 Continuous assessments

Elective course: (Year two)
30 Procedures will be demonstrated and supervised
15 Procedures will be assessed continuously until competency is achieved in specific and critical cross-field outcomes

2). Formative assessment:

Written portion:

Quantitative evaluation

Questions
30% of the paper will constitute Fundamental Nursing
70% of the paper will constitute Core Nursing
This distribution will be based on the number of credits

Number of questions
Four questions will be set
Two from Fundamental Nursing
Two from Core Nursing

Marks:
Two questions will carry 10 marks
Two questions will carry 15 marks

Total will be 50 marks

Qualitative evaluation:
Evaluation tools will be designed for

Individual projects
These will evaluate the individual in individual work using assessment criteria from critical cross-field outcomes

Group projects:
These will evaluate the individual capabilities in group work using the assessment criteria from critical cross-field outcomes

Examination:
One 3-hour examination paper will be compiled, examined and moderated by the South African Nursing Council at the end of the elective course

Practical portion:
Assessment criteria on evaluation tools will be observed to assess competency in exit-level outcomes

Assessment criteria will cover the following:
Knowledge – the extent of integration of knowledge from fundamental and core nursing with clinical practice

Psycho-motor skills – specific outcomes will be evaluated through assessment criteria designed for each specific skill on evaluation tools

Values and attitudes – will be evaluated as demonstrated during interaction with a patient and with colleagues in the course of carrying out their duties

Final evaluation – both qualitative and quantitative evaluation will be used
