Critical Cross-field Assessment Criteria:

1.1 Create a therapeutic communication environment for colleagues, patients, clients and relatives.
1.2 Establish, maintain and terminate therapeutic relationships.

2.1 Solve problems by means of exploring and critically evaluating multiplicity of factors and situations.
2.2 Solve problems by weighing alternative solutions to the problem.

3.1 Collect data by using observations and interviews.
3.2 Organise and interpret data, recognize malfunctioning and abnormalities and refer to appropriate services.
3.3 Use equipment and technology safely, appropriately and ethically.

4. Create awareness of preventative and promotive health in individuals, family, group and community by means of relevant health education.

5. Demonstrate ability to relate well with colleagues, sub-ordinates, members of the multi-disciplinary team.

6.1 Display a professional attitude by observing own responsibilities and obligations.
6.2 Observe the principle of Batho Pele and relevant cultural orientations of clients / patients.

7.2 Analyse and interpret information to reach a sound decision to improve nursing care.

8.1 Display confidence and self reliance in conducting self study in search of knowledge and skills to base decision on sound judgement.
8.2 Participate in in-service education and continuing education.

Specific Outcomes:

1.1.1 Work effectively in a team as a leader and or participant.
1.1.2 Give appropriate and relevant health education considering cultural differences of individuals, groups, family and community.

2.1 Relate learning gained from previous experience to knowledge gained from academic situations.
2.2 Apply such experience to different nursing contexts.

3.1.1 Identify needs, problems and areas of deficit.
3.1.2 Formulate a nursing diagnosis based on objective and subjective assessment.
3.1.3 Prioritise needs, problems and areas of deficit involving individual, family, groups and communities.
3.2.1 Adapt plan of action according to individual needs, family groups and community needs in socio-cultural contexts.
3.2.2 Ensure prompt, clear accurate complete recording.
3.2.3 Ensure feedback from the individual, family, groups and communities.

4.1.1 Prepare and conduct health education talks relevant to individual, family, group and community.
4.1.2 Evaluate effectiveness of lesson.
4.1.3 Mobilise for implementation of learnt material.

Integrated Assessment:

Is an ongoing process and learner should understand the criteria used.

Continuous assessment is preferred rather than a one-off assessment occasion.

1. Continuous Assessment

Is done throughout the duration of the programme in all the learning areas through student accompaniment by facilitators in the following areas:
Clinical areas
Community
Clinical laboratories
Health centres
Classroom

Formative and summative assessment are integrated in order to include:
Cognitive
Psychomotor and
Affective skills in all learning areas.
Learners should be able to demonstrate achievement of the stated learning outcomes at different years of study throughout their period of training (2 ? years.)

2.1 Formative evaluation:

First year pre-entry examination

Prior to writing the first year external examination, learners undergo a written examination conducted by the school on Ethos of nursing and Professional practice i.e. Module 1

Passing this module enables the learner to enter for the 1st `year South African Nursing Council Examination.

First year examination (External Assessment)

Consists of two portions

Objective Structure Clinical Evaluation (O. S. C. E.)Conducted by the school.
Written examination:
2 x 3 hours paper of the following:
Integrated general nursing science
Applied social science
Primary health care and community based nursing integrated in all learning areas.

2.2 Summative evaluation

Consists of two portions:

Practical portion i.e. objective structured clinical evaluation conducted by the school.
Written portion i.e. 2×3 hour papers comprising:
Primary health care and community based nursing integrated in all learning areas.
Integrated general nursing science II
Applied social science
Ethos and professional practice and unit teaching. The qualification is awarded after summative evaluation at the end of the programme as a qualification.
