Assessment Criteria:

The learner can:

1. Generate contextually relevant interpretations of a specific historical context using relevant documents by using recognised historiographical methods
Use secondary resources (e g, concordances, commentaries, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, study guides, monographs and journals) to interpret the historical context in a way relevant to the broader social context in SA and globally.
Explain the cultural and social features of the communities of the historical contexts and identify the differences between those and contemporary communities
Use historical sources (in libraries or archives) to interpret the history of the context under investigation and other relevant contexts and to view contemporary problems in historical perspective.

2. Demonstrate extensive specialisation in a specific area of the history of Christianity
Demonstrate wide-ranging, specialised scholastic skills
Conduct advanced research across a major discipline in the history of Christianity

(Critical, cross-field Outcomes)

1. Identify the historical nature and causes of specific social problems (eg. alienation, abuse, poverty, unemployment, AIDS, environmental issues, etc).

2. Participate under supervision within communities and their various structures
Working and communicating effectively with supervisor and other post-graduate students.

3. Accountability to supervisor(s), community structures and clients/participants.

4. Analyse information regarding the history of Christianity in its social context.
Reformat and evaluate information regarding the history of Christianity in its social context.

5. Select and apply basic historiographical skills.

6. Formulate concrete responses to community problems.
Demonstrate care for the socio-cultural and eco-environment
Show respect for denominational differences and sensitivities
Express relatedness between problems of a particular local faith community and its national/international structures, and wider non-religious context.

7. Commitment to participation in community development structures, projects in association with identified goals and objectives.

8. Manage commitment to denominational concern with integrity amidst cultural pluralism.
Demonstrate a high level of awareness of cultural differences in historical contexts and perspectives and the ability to communicate effectively in an intercultural context.

9. Be a competent member of the academic community/professional clergy, able to do a well grounded research thesis.

10. Write research proposals that indicate that the learner is able to identify a problem in the history of Christianity, formulate research problems and suggest possible solutions to the problems.
Formulate hypotheses
Conduct relevant fieldwork during the investigation.
Evaluate and interpret findings
Report on the findings of the investigation and formulate recommendations that emanate from the findings.
Create a new model that can be applied to solve the problem investigated.

11. Identify and analyse different scientific procedures in terms of the problem being researched.

12. Critically read, interpret and analyse literature from different sources
Search for literature on the identified research problem.
Compare writings of different authors on the same related topic.
Synthesise reading material on the topic being researched.
Draw conclusions from different readings and indicate anomalies.
Create a theoretical framework provided by the literature review
Create a new model/approach/theory that is applicable to the problem
Compile a complete bibliography.
