Outcomes will be assessed as follows:

1. The assessment used for the BCur ensures that the purpose of the qualification is achieved and meets the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 7,

2. Within a problem-based learning context, a range of formative and summative assessment methods are used, such as portfolios, simulations, clinical workplace assessments, journal evaluations, case-studies, case presentations, peer-group and preceptor evaluations

3. From the assessment of samples of cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills, generalising to the domain of the independent nurse practitioner, takes place in a judicious and planned way

4. The criterion used to assess programme outcomes, is whether the information and conceptual content of the work, the qualifying learner submits for marking is accurate and valid.

5. Competence in programme outcomes will be demonstrated if the qualifying learner shows:

The ability to correlate information and concepts learned in a range of modules

Proposes valid and appropriate solutions for a range of theoretical and practical problems

6. To demonstrate competence in programme outcomes, a qualifying learner must be able to write logical and coherent reports and essays, undertake and successfully complete a supervised basic research project and satisfactorily answer examination and test questions

7. The qualifying learner’s written and oral presentations must be of an acceptable standard in terms of the use of Afrikaans or English language and the structural organisation of presentations

d). CLINICAL ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The qualifying learner is comprehensively assessed in each of the following disciplines:

General Nursing
Community Nursing
Mental Health and Mental Illness Nursing
Mother, Child and Women’s Health Nursing
Professional Practise and Management
Education

Based on the assessment criteria as indicated in point 3.1, each of the above disciplines contains a comprehensive set of theoretical and clinical competencies that are individually assessed. Both the theoretical and clinical assessment components must be independently passed with a minimum of 50%

e). EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The qualifying learner must demonstrate competence in:

Flexibility in the use of appropriate strategies and methods in educational presentations

The ability to independently gather, logically organise and critically appraise information.

f). COMMUNICATION ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The qualifying learner must demonstrate competence in:

Educational, therapeutic, support, and activity focussed groups

Educational, assessment and counselling interviews

Presentations and written assignments

Auditing of documentation

g). PROFESSIONAL AND NURSING MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The qualifying learner must demonstrate:

Clinical, professional and managerial competence in the following areas:

Primary, secondary and tertiary health care services
Medical, surgical, paediatric, psychiatric, obstetric and community health care services

Accuracy in the identification and documentation of needs, problems and appropriate nursing interventions

Decision making ability based on legally and ethically sound creative and critical thinking within the statutory framework of nursing science.

Systematic and appropriate problem-solving ability

The ability to interact with other team members

h). NURSING RESEARCH ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The qualifying learner must demonstrate competence in:

The initiation, planning, implementation, reporting and presentation of a basic group research project that is supervised.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Different formative and summative assessment methods are used in all the modules of the programme to evaluate applied competence. The degree of application of competencies within each assessment is determined by the level of the module and the complexity of the content.

The qualifying learner must meet all the standards of the educational programme and the minimum requirements for registration with the South African Nursing Council.
